Illamasqua: "Freak" Parfum and Reviews of my Fav Illamasqua Items

Illamasqua is a British based cosmetic company devoted to "makeup for your alter ego". I had run across it on one of my visits to London, tried some nail varnish, and fell for the deep pigmentation and long-lasting wear. The line in general reminded me a little of what Urban Decay originally was (I was one of the first boutiques in NY to carry UD before they went mainstream and they've changed quite a bit), with the professional aspects of theatrical makeup, similar but definitely not the same as Mac. I love Mac, but Illamasqua is more extreme with very high concentrations of pigment and the line can be used by professionals without having to go the "pro" route. I'd say the prices compare to that of Mac.

I'll start with the items I purchased through Sephora, and available in the US. FYI the colour swatches are much truer on the Illamasqua site than on Sephora.

Rampage Nail Varnish

Many -- not all -- of their nail varnish colours are carried by Sephora, and if you're looking for an introduction to the line this may be the way to go. The colours are highly pigmented, and I'm very impressed with their long wear. They have a wide choice of interesting colours, and one of my favs is "Rampage" which is a creamy very dark green. It's described on their site as "dark green jelly, glossy finish", and Sephora describes it as "dark forest green, glossy finish". I'd say it's not quite forest green as there's some blue to it, after applying two coats its so dark it will come off as a green-black. I'm biased as I love green, and have the collection to prove it! But this is unique and I wear it often when I'm bored of frosts or glitters. It holds up better than many high-end brands (I'm looking at you Chanel -- they may have fantastic colours but it chips like crazy within the day, even with a top coat... sadly I've purchased my last and will no longer buy into the hype, if other brands can get it right they should be able to as well) and I do intend to try a few more interesting colours!

Next I purchased a few things at once; lipstick, primer, and cake eyeliner and sealer. Let me preface my reviews by saying it was difficult to try and capture the effects of the primer and foundation in pictures, so I apologise in advance for the lack of quality photos.

Maneater Lipstick

The lipstick I purchased was the shade "Maneater", a "classic cherry red". (Again, Sephora doesn't carry the full range, so having a look on the Illamasqua site you may find shades more to your liking. Hopefully as it gains popularity here, Sephora will carry the full line, or even better Illamasqua will open their own boutiques here!) It goes on just as it looks in the tube, and is a matte formula. I tend to go for mattes as they last longer before having to reapply and I honestly don't like too much frost on my lips. The lipstick is formulated without SPF, and this is so that in both photography and film the colour will read true. I had the chance to test it when I was at the Brian Froud reception last week and the photographer for the event took my photo. My lips were indeed the same colour as when I applied it hours before! (If I get permission, I'll post the photo.) It's on the dry side as its matte, and if you don't care for that this is easily remedied by using a lip balm (with SPF to combat any sun damage) underneath. (It won't change the colour or the wash-out you get with film or photography.) I will definitely be purchasing more of their amazing colours -- as a red lipstick obsessive, they have so many glorious shades to choose from (and many other scrumptious shades!) I'm definitely a lipstick woman and have given up on sticky gloss that wears off immediately.

Satin Primer

The "Satin Primer" can be used alone or under foundation to create a smooth canvas. "Containing UVA and UVB filters, Illamasqua Satin Primer lifts and highlights the face, creating a stunning dewy effect to enhance the siren within." Since my skin is very dry, I'm forever trying to get that "dewy effect" so I decided to try this as opposed to their "Matt Primer" which would seem better for oily or combination skin. The effect is lovely, and it does indeed give my skin a dewy look under whatever foundation I use. It's dewy, not glittery, giving just the right amount of moisture my parched skin needs, and keeps it hydrated all day. Definitely will purchase again when I'm out.

Cake Eyeliner in "Mislead" pure black.

Cake eyeliner was my choice for many years as I could get the consistency -- either dark or more sheer -- depending on how thick I made the paste. I worked with theatrical palettes of water based face paint, down to cheap cake eyeliner and I loved all of them. I also purchased the sealing gel, as I thought this would be great to seal the eyeliner. One big problem I always had with cake eyeliner is that if my eyes teared (and they always seem to tear due to allergies), the eyeliner would come off in spots. The sealing gel solves this problem. While I really love this product, the jury is still out for me as its been too many years of using gel eyeliners that I think I'm a bit out of practice! When I get it right, its fantastic, but if I don't get the consistency thick enough, its wishy-washy. With a little more practice I will probably come to love it as a staple as it was for me for so many years. Until then (how do you get to Carnegie Hall?) practice, practice, practice!

Now on to the products I had to order directly from the UK.

I love perfume and when I had my shop I made my own witchy blends for darn near any magical intention and sometimes just for fun to create a new scent for myself. I even wrote a chapbook outlining how to make incense and oils and taught hundreds of hundreds the same, and have in my archives a much larger expanded book version which also includes baths, and scented candles (yeah, one of these days I'll finish it and send it off to my publisher). I used to love playing mad scientist and coming up with unique blends, and I had testers that would test out the blends for wearability as well as their magical properties. As a little girl I used to look forward to Xmas and lovely almond scented Jergen's lotion, as well as Tinkerbell cologne! I adore fragrance and wear it everyday even if I'm staying home!

My tastes run pretty eclectic, from the white flower based "Fracas" which I've been wearing since I was about 18 (definitely not a scent to slather on, nor does it agree with everyone's body chemistry), to the clean, citrus scent of Cristalle Eau Verte, to more masculine scents sometimes even resorting to wearing men's cologne. I'm always on the lookout for new scents, and await new fragrances as many await the new fashion collections. One of the things I look forward to when traveling overseas is getting new perfume before it becomes available on the US market, it always feels special to have it before anyone else here.

When I found out about the launch of Illamasqua's first scent, "Freak Eau De Parfum" I was smitten. Reading the ingredient list to a friend, they asked if I had sold the recipe to Illamasqua as it was so very close to some of my magical blends! I became more and more intrigued, and I finally decided to purchase it before trying (c'mon Sephora, get with it and put it for sale in shops so we can try before we buy!) something I NEVER do, as scent is so individual and will always smell different on each person due to everyone's own unique body chemistry. Of course on Sephora it sold out. Disappointed, I cheered when I realised I had a birthday discount coming up from Illamasqua and I was able to order online directly from them.

The anticipation was killing me even though it took less than a week to arrive. I tore open that box faster than you can say "belladonna" and set to testing it out. Here's what I found.

While Illamaqua is marketing "Freak" as a unisex fragrance, at first the scent of flowers is seems very feminine. The "top" notes are of night-blooming flowers such as Black Davana, Opium Flower, and Belladonna. The "heart notes" are Poison Hemlock, Datura (one of my faves, Moonflower), and Queen of the Night Blossom (also known as Cereus -- a night-blooming flower that blooms just one night a year). "Base notes" are Frankincense, Oud (aloeswood, or agarwood), and Myrrh. It's this base note mixed with lingering heart notes after the top note has faded, and why I can see this as a unisex fragrance. It would seem this would be a very heady blend, but it mellows out into something very intriguing, and I adore everything about it from the unique bottle shape (with a little snail crawling up the side!) to the scent itself. "Freak" has found a permanent spot in my fragrance wardrobe!

Skin Base Foundation

This small amount will cover my entire face (it's actually a wee bit too much.) The coverage I like is light, so if you want heavier coverage, you'd use a bit more to build until you get the coverage you like.

I've been a devotee of Bare Escentuals mineral foundation for quite a few years but recently noticed I'm getting very bad eczema patches and flaking (during the summer when my skin tends to be more hydrated due to more oil production no less) whenever I wear it, so decided I needed to try something new. I had read about the launch of Illamasqua's new Skin Base Foundation, based on (but not exactly the same as) Japanese Beauty Balms. Skin Base does not have SPF for the aforementioned reasons, however wearing SPF under solves the problem. The more I read reviews and watched YouTube tutorials, the more anxious I was to try their product even though the verdicts on these reviews were quite varied. Not yet sold in the US, this was something I also had to order blind as I had only their suggestions (they have a list of popular brands and the comparable colour in Skin Base) and the online swatches to go by. I thought SB7 would be perfect, but it's been out of stock for some time so back to the drawing board. I ascertained that SB8 was just a touch darker, and after reading many reviews that said their Skin Base tends to run on the light side I decide to try this.

Tried to show the luminosity after just a light application. (Whew, bad lighting, I look yellow!) Hard to tell, but I only used a light hand under my eyes and my dark circles have nearly disappeared! One more coat and you'd never know I had dark circles at all! Oh and I don't have dark patches below my cheekbones, that's shadows as my cheekbones are naturally defined. You can also just about make out the "Maneater" lipstick.

Again when it arrived, I was thrilled and ripped open the package (packaging presentation is gorgeous, but I tend to be a packaging whore!) trying a swatch on my hand. No one could tell where the foundation was swatched! So I went ahead and tried it on my face. I used my regular serum and moisturizer, and Illamasqua's Satin Primer. It applies so silky, and with my dry, eczema prone skin it provided just enough moisture to give me a dewy look without it being oily. I'm sure the Satin Primer added to this effect. The coverage was perfect -- I don't need heavy coverage, just enough to even out some sun damage on my cheekbones, and my horrid dark (they look black and blue without concealer!) circles. This is buildable coverage as I learned with my dark circles. A light hand wasn't enough to cover them completely, so another light coat and I didn't need concealer! Now this alone is a huge thing for me as I'm constantly searching for the perfect concealer (so far Mac, the new one from Rimmel, and one from Boots that I can only get in the UK are the only that do the job) usually to be disappointed as my circles are so bruised looking its difficult to conceal them and make them blend with the rest of my face. I didn't have any issues with flaking, no oily spots as some reviewers noted, and the finish is beautiful and very natural looking. One thing I noticed with the Bare Escentuals is that even though I have small, tight pores, they looked quite big and I could never use it under my eyes as it enhanced every single line no matter how fine. Not so with the Skin Base, my pores look normal and I've already explained the miracle it performed under my eyes! I will probably purchase the lighter SB7 when it comes back in stock as I usually have to blend two or more colours of foundation to get just the right shade (I mix three or four BE shades to get it right) anyway. While it doesn't look dark and it looks quite natural, to me it appears ever so slightly darker than my natural colouring so a mixture is probably the way to go. One note on application: Skin Base tends to dry quickly, so I suggest doing one part of your face at a time so you don't wind up with blotches of foundation every so often! I tend to work fast, using a foundation brush so I didn't have this problem, but one time I stopped to do something I noticed it was harder to blend. Adore this, and will definitely purchase again!

Now that I've tried a varied selection from their range, I'm sure I'll be trying even more. I love their philosophy, the products are of superior quality, and frankly cosmetics have gotten so expensive even at the drug stores (seriously, our local CVS sells L'Oreal HIP gel liner for just $1 cheaper than Mac, and it dries out immediately!) that I'd rather wait and get good quality for just a little bit more.

One more thing I'd like to note is their connection with the S.O.P.H.I.E. charity. The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was set up upon the death of Sophie (only 19) at the hands of young miscreants who decided they didn't like the way her and her boyfriend looked (they were goths). It stands for "Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred, Intolerance Everywhere" and is something close to my heart as there were many times back in the day I had to run for my life while being pelted with bottles and rocks, and the Punk Glam Princess has experienced bullying and worse at a very young age due to her appearance (and yes, I raised hell at school and got them to implement more policies on verbal abuse/ bullying of all types.) Sophie's birthday would've been just three days before mine, so it became even more apparent that I wanted to do something to help. Illamasqua has several ways you can help; donate £1 to the foundation, purchase a S.O.P.H.I.E. eye pencil and £3 goes to the foundation, or do as I did and purchase a wristband for £2 and all proceeds go to the foundation. My reasoning is that by wearing the wristband I hope it will raise questions so that I can bring this important issue to light. I've written to the foundation, and should they ever decide to expand to the US, I will be first in line to help spread the word. Queen Bitch

No, I'm not referring to myself (though I'll fully admit I am a Queen Bitch when need be) I'm referring to the David Bowie song. This song keeps coming up -- on a film advertisement (no clue which one, I get too excited hearing the song and jump up and dance when it comes on), on Pandora Radio (it was decided that a "bippity boppity hat" is quite desirable!), and the talk of "Queens" (immediately making me think of this song) on Wendy Brandes' Blog. Considering the inundation of the song, I figured maybe I should post a video. So here is a "Nostalgic Music" post for you to enjoy!

Brian, Wendy, Toby Froud at Animazing Gallery Soho

If you know me, you know just how faery obsessed I am. If you don't, well I've just stated it so now you do! (Do excuse the lack of coherent writing, my brain is quite faery-addled and probably will be for a few days.) Brian Froud is the world's foremost faery artist and I had the pleasure of meeting him some years ago when the Punk Glam Princess was about 4 or 5 years old (she'll be 12, you do the math, read the above bit about faery-addling) at the infamous Books of Wonder children's bookstore. A lovely new friend, Katie Lennon, who is also a faery artist told me about the gallery opening, and snagged an invite for me & the PGP, and her little sprite as well. So off we went on a faery adventure...

Animazing gallery is noted for it's interesting collections of artwork such as those by Charles M. Schultz, Maurice Sendak, Tim Burton and others (a small collection of various artists is available for viewing/ purchase), but we were there for the opening of the Frouds Visions for Film + Faerie, and it exceeded expectations in every way.

First there is the art. Whoa, what a collection! From lost drawings from "Labyrinth" to Wendy and Toby's sculptures, of which I'd never seen in person. The intricacies of these sculptures were astounding, not only the whimsy (the very nature of all things fae) but the artisanal craft that goes into each one very simply blew my mind. Then of course there is the artwork, and really all I can say is that if you're at all familiar with the artwork of Brian Froud -- from the films he's worked on to his sketches and paintings from various books -- you will not be disappointed!

The evening was also enhanced by the attendance of Mrs. Jane Henson (of Jim Henson and the Muppets fame), her daughter and granddaughter. Near the end of the evening Jane Henson graced us with the ultimate compliment by stopping us to say the two sprites looked as if they stepped right out of one of the Froud paintings, then looked at us and said we did too! (FYI the sprites had been singing "The Muppet Song" just prior to this, hence another reason why I don't believe in coincidence.) Granted, there was a great deal of faery energy in the room (you could practically see the pointed ears, wings, and other assorted faery attributes) but it was so sweet of her to stop and give us the compliment, and its a moment I shall treasure.

There was an auction of a Brian Froud painting, "Tinkerbell" done as a concept drawing for Peter Pan (setting the record straight -- of which he was uncredited) with proceeds going to the Jim Henson foundation. Quite entertaining, as it was done by the recipients of a grant from the foundation.

The exhibition opens to the public today, 2 December 2011. Saturday 3 December 2011 the gallery will host a book signing by the Frouds from 3-6 pm, open to the public (books and posters purchased at the gallery and I believe you have to RSVP, see website for details) which we're hoping to attend. The exhibit will be on through 12 February, but it will be condensed at some point so I suggest going as soon as possible to view the whole collection and purchase a marvelous holiday gift!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just wanted to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here in the US. I have a lot to give thanks for, but this holiday always makes me a bit melancholy too. Thinking of the decimation of the Native Americans that were so generous to help the arrivals to the new world, never fails to come to mind when celebrating. I'm reminded that my ancestors were part and parcel of this genocide, even though later quite a few married into different tribes. Perhaps its an ancestral memory that makes me so melancholy, having Native blood (however watered down it is at this point) along with the dichotomy of the blood of my ancestors that were part of the first settlers here? I don't mean to make this morbid or a lecture of any kind, but if you feel so inclined, this Thanksgiving say a little prayer of respect for the Native Americans who helped the first settlers have their first Thanksgiving, then were decimated for the privilege of helping. (For reference please read Russell Means book, "Where White Men Fear to Tread". Means has been quoted as saying "Indians are dying of sympathy, what we want is RESPECT".)

Nostalgic Music Hanoi Rocks

One of the very first "hair/ glam" metal bands in the early '80s was Hanoi Rocks from Finland. Everyone from Poison, to Guns n Roses has stated that they were a huge influence on them both musically and stylistically. Tragedy hit the band in '84 when their drummer Razzle was killed in a car accident, but they continued on. I still adore them and have been listening to them a lot lately (sadly I only have a cassette left, must rectify that!) and Mike Monroe was not only easy on the eyes, but a nice guy too. Andy McCoy did one of the best Keith Richards I've ever seen and their shows were non-stop energy packed rock 'n roll. Here's something I've always loved, and the video gives a good idea of what it was like to see them live during the 80s.

Sadly Hanoi Rocks never achieved major acclaim, though they have a massive cult following. Include me in there!

Halloween DIY Costume

Yet again this year the Punk Glam Princess has gotten creative and mum gets to do all the sewing! She's going as Alice from "Madness Returns" a character from a video game. Pretty creepy and gory -- that's my girl, always in the "spirit" of Halloween!

Yeah we even found a bloody hatchet, and I have the perfect wig for the outfit. Even though it can be a chore to make her costumes I do admit I quite like using my creative juices figuring out the best way to make it. Especially when it can be quite cold here on Halloween so she might have to bundle under the costume.

The whole project cost under $20 including the hatchet, ribbon, tulle, calico, striped tights, and the apron fabric. Certainly beats the $60-$80 they wanted for a ready made costume!

My costume wound up changing. I had this whole Victorian Vampire Queen theme, but got too overheated and the headpiece wouldn't stay on. So I went in the complete opposite direction and became a modern Vampire Queen. I made the headpiece out of bits and pieces, vintage feathers, a raven, a rose hair clip, all stuff I had in my craft stash. All done on top of this massive crown. It was a little top heavy, but fun to wear! The PGK was a crow man, with a pinstriped suit and a huge crow beak!

Since it was a school night, we didn't go crazy with decor outside -- needless to say the storm would've destroyed everything anyway -- so we went simple. And it was an early night as the kids had school.

Modern Halloween Traditions and Their Ancient Roots

Over a decade ago I contributed to a book on Halloween which delved into the roots of this pre-Christian ancient holiday scared to the Celts. I decided to write a little and educate those who weren't aware of it's Pagan roots, thus showing a bit about where our customs today originally came from. *Please note, there are volumes and volumes written on the subject. In the interest of brevity, I will be keeping things as simple as possible. If you wish to read further, please consult your local library or favourite independent bookstore who will be happy to help you find more information on this intriguing holiday.

The ancient celebration of Samhain (from the Celtic language, pronounced 'Sowen' or 'Sowain' -- long 'o' --and not 'SAM-HAIN') comes from their custom of celebrating those they have lost over the years, essentially a festival and honoring of the dead. Thus the custom of dressing as scary spirits and the dead came about (I still stay true to this and will only dress as the dead in honour of the holiday, okay maybe the undead too.) Later when the Pagans and indigenous people of the Celtic isles were reluctantly absorbed into the mainstream Christian religions the Christians couldn't stop them from celebrating their beloved holiday and thus made the day a holy day; the Feast of All Souls Day. The Feast of All Saints Day was marked on the 1 November to try to downplay the previous nights activities, and gave the saints without their special day a day of honour.

Ancient Celts didn't have the pumpkins we associate with Halloween, those came from the "New World" and were incorporated when the settlers came to the US. What they used were turnips! The turnips were cut into scary faces and set outside the home to scare away any evil spirits, hence the spooky faces. Similar to the idea of placing gargoyles on buildings to protect them from bad influences. Children did go door to door, asking for money and cakes. These cakes were made specially for the occasion and were called "soul cakes", lanterns were made from the turnips to help light the way.

Aside from it being one of the most important holidays of the Celtic calendar -- this was the mark of the Celtic New Year, the last harvest and the start of winter -- this was also the time of year when the Celts believed the veil between the living and dead was very thin making contact with those gone before very easy. This is where our Halloween traditions of divination became passed down to this very day. If you're even the slightest bit in tune with your psychic side, this time of year you will notice all sorts interesting "phenomenon". Things like the smell of a grandmother's cooking suddenly wafting by, or feeling as if one of your beloved pets that's passed on is cuddling next to you. If you're really in tune, the noise can get pretty overwhelming, and its sometimes hard to tell if its psychic phenomena or the real thing (ask my husband, our house ghost was really active the other night and I was yelling at him to call 911 because I swore someone was in the house, then felt the total dolt when I realised what it really was, I nearly gave my poor husband a heart attack!)

This was also one of the Celts' major fire festivals. Fire was a means to keep bad spirits away, and attract good spirits that may need help on their journey. This is another tradition held forth today, with fire lanterns and candles being burnt in homes around the US.

The Roman influence on Samhain came from the addition of their celebration of the Goddess Pomona, a goddess of fruits and seeds, thus incorporating bobbing for apples to this very day! Did you know if you cut an apple sideways the pits create a five pointed star? Also a Pagan symbol which erroneously has become synonymous with evil. Bah, the only evil is what people create!

It wasn't until the 19th century with the influx of immigrants to America that Halloween tradition began to filter over to the new world. By the 1920s, many traditions had been solidity set in place here, with the heyday in the 1950s mostly for children. It wasn't until more recent times adults decided to join in on the fun as well going all out with their costumes and attending various costume balls. According to retail sales figures Halloween is only second to the Christmas/ Winter holiday season!

If you want to add a little traditional flair to your Halloween celebration why not make some soul cakes to serve at your Halloween party?

Soul Cakes

Soul cakes get stale within a day or two, so eat 'em while they're hot.

Makes 12 to 15 2-inch soul cakes

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, ground fresh if possible

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, ground fresh if possible

1/2 teaspoon salt

Generous pinch of saffron

1/2 cup milk

1 stick (8 tablespoons) unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar

2 egg yolks

1/2 cup currants

For the Glaze:

1 egg yolk, beaten

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Combine the flour, the nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl. Mix well with a fork.

Crumble the saffron threads into a small saucepan and heat over low heat just until they become aromatic, taking care not to burn them. Add the milk and heat just until hot to the touch. The milk will have turned a bright yellow. Remove from heat.

Cream the butter and sugar together in a medium bowl with a wooden spoon (or use an electric mixer with the paddle attachment). Add the egg yolks and blend in thoroughly with the back of the spoon. Add the spiced flour and combine as thoroughly as possible; the mixture will be dry and crumbly.

One tablespoon at a time, begin adding in the warm saffron milk, blending vigorously with the spoon. When you have a soft dough, stop adding milk; you probably won't need the entire half-cup.

Turn the dough out onto a floured counter and knead gently, with floured hands, until the dough is uniform. Roll out gently to a thickness of 1/2 inch. Using a floured 2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, cut out as many rounds as you can and set on an ungreased baking sheet. You can gather and re-roll the scraps, gently.

Decorate the soul cakes with currants and then brush liberally with the beaten egg yolk. Bake for 15 minutes, until just golden and shiny. Serve warm, with cold pumpkin juice.

Steve Mach Tribute

I was working on one of my "Nostalgic Music" posts two weeks ago featuring some old friends and their band. I had stopped because I was looking for a specific picture, taken of one of them a few years back with the Punk Glam Princess holding his bass at CBGB. Monday morning on the 3rd I got the call that Steve Mach -- the friend who's picture I was looking for -- had been killed. Nearly two weeks later and friends and I are all in a state of shock as Steve was a gentle soul, loved animals, adored my daughter, and wouldn't hurt anyone. So instead of a cheeky post featuring his former band Skin n' Bones, this is now a tribute to a friend who is greatly missed by all who knew him.

Of course on the morning I found out about his death I opened my photo file and zeroed right in on the photo (in spite of a file of over 5000 photographs) of the Punk Glam Princess holding his bass. He loved the PGP always saying how lucky we were to have such a great kid. He really adored her and was thrilled that she was holding his bass.

I think the PGP is pouting because of the noise, she was only 5 in this photo, and you can barely make out the earplugs! CBGB was LOUD!

One of the things that's really freaking me out is that the photo was taken exactly 6 years to the day he died. ):

RIP Steve, this ones for you. I know we can't bring you back but are working for justice so that your death isn't in vain.

The saying, "what comes around, goes around" has been proven throughout the history of fashion. Stylish peeps the world over have been stimulated by trends of decades passed time and time again. This weeks Links A La Mode is influenced by your interpretation of fashion fads and trends interpreted to suit our modern world.

The funky 70's boho glam look is in full effect with flowing skirts, high waist lines and chunky platforms. Another trend making a loud avant garde blip on my radar is the classic ladylike look of the 50's and 60's. Women are embracing their curves and enhancing them with shape flattering silhouettes. Lastly, current fashion do's that continue to inspire me are clever use of sheer, crochet, macrame and lace fabrics. And last but not least, retro accessories are back in a huge way; statement bangles, fanny packs and cat eye shades are loud on the fashion forefront.

NYFW: Positive Reinforcement for Girls?

I had sworn off NYFW this year. As serendipity would have it, Saturday we had nothing to do, PGK was working OT so I suggested we make a visit to Lincoln Center to give the PGP some fashion inspiration. It was the perfect thing to do to make up for a boring stay at home day!

We wandered around a bit, got our pictures taken every few steps we took (pink haired woman with an orange haired young lady gets the paps excited I guess?) then discovered Teen Vogue had a huge set up for girls. Of course the PGP had to nearly run there. Inside they had makeup for the girls to play with, healthy snacks, and musical guests amongst other things.

We happened to get there just as Wynter Gordon was about to perform a few acoustic songs. The woman has a set of pipes on her! Lovely strong, soulful voice. When she finished, she spoke to no one and made a beeline for the PGP. Wynter said "You look fantastic! I love your hair and your whole look! Don't ever let anyone try to change you, always be your gorgeous self!" Doesn't sound like much but having someone you don't know give you words of encouragement are not only empowering, but raise your confidence levels. Every young girl is insecure, and this made the PGP shine with pride.

She even got the nerve up to come with me to go to see the Monique L'Huillier show. She loved the glamorous clothes and the fact that she felt part of the fashion crowd. Again, people stopped us to tell her how great she looked and I think she was floating with all the positive reinforcement.

The next day we HAD to return because her two favourite YouTubers -- Blair juicystar07 and Elle AllThatGlitters21 -- Fowler were appearing at Teen Vogue. While dad stayed with her I ran off to catch the L.A.M.B. presentation. Back at Teen Vogue, she had made a new friend and was thrilled she got a Teen Vogue goodie bag. We took loads of fun pictures, then called it a night.

Monday night we were off to see the Betsy Johnson show with Jazmin from Vintage Vandalizm. We got great seats and PGP spotted Nicky Minaj in the front row. So I told her to go up and ask politely if she could take a picture. Nicky was so sweet to her, telling her she loved her hair, and not to let anyone tell her not to be herself. More positive reinforcement! She loved the show, and the fact that she got her own goodie bag! Unfortunately we were too exhausted to attend the after party. Sadly I forgot my camera and the bright lights washed out any decent photos of the clothes ):

Oddly while trying to take runway shots this one wound up being one of the best! Notice the white blur to the right, that was one of Betsy's outfits. Yeah iPhones take good photos but too slow!

For woman who'd sworn off NYFW, I managed to pack in quite a lot in a few days! Well it "is" a woman's prerogative to change her mind!

Vintage Lingerie Collection Part 2 (pic heavy!)

After the response of part one, I decided to pull some more out for photographing. Most of these are the things I wear most often and was what I have hanging on the back of my bedroom door. Yeah I squeeze clothes where I can -- you'll die when I get into the trunks!

Vera hostess gown from the 60s. Love the print and colours and I've worn it as a dress, especially when I want to enjoy my morning tea on the porch or patio without the neighbors thinking I'm totally a hussy!

Bra slip from the 60s. This one might get culled as the growth of my bust no longer makes it fit!

Simple 60s slip. Comfy for sleeping on hot nights, or for heating things up!

A recent acquisition over the summer at a flea market in CT. A huge pile of basically junk, but I spotted the peach and yanked it out asking the price. The vendor said "its your lucky day, name your price." I looked it over in the sunlight and noticed that most of the silk is shattered, with the top being intact. So I said how about $2? He said "Sold!" I couldn't believe my luck as this was one of few I've come across with a collar. Because of the shattering I may cut it down to a blouse.

Dressing gown from the 60s, made in Shanghai. I purchased it brand new from a thrift shop over 30 years ago and still wear it often.

I call this my Lucy Ricardo smock. Remember when she'd wear things like this around the house? I'm pretty sure its either 40s or 50s.

This kimono style dressing gown was given to me off Freecycle. A British woman was getting rid of her aunt's clothing that no longer fit her. Everything (including this) was hand made beautifully. Best of all, her aunt was just my size! I believe it all dated from around WWII.

Another 50s dressing gown that came with its original tags. I've never worn it, saying I'm going to hem it, but never want to play around with it.

So that's the exhaustive selection of part 2 of my collection. Now do you guys realise just how much I have and really need to stop hoarding it, letting some move on to happier homes?

Local Colour -- Peter Falk

It was on this day in 2005 a ceremony was held in Ossining, NY (most famously known as home to SingSing prison) to name Prospect Ave Peter Falk Place as this is where the famous actor grew up. During the ceremony the sign was covered with a raincoat, pulled down to reveal the sign. It's just a hop from our own home and it gives me a little smile when I see the sign as I happen to love Peter Falk. "Wings of Desire" is one of my all time favourite films and I think his role is brilliant.

About a month ago we were at the local historical society's tag sale where an elderly woman started chatting with me. Finding out I was a writer, she regaled me with some tales of the late Mr. Falk as both her and her husband knew him well having gone to school with him and known him some time after. Of course she had only lovely things to say and he seemed to have been a very good hearted man.

One of the most amusing tales was one regarding his glass eye. It's well known that his father owned a dry goods store on Main St in town, but not as well known that above was a pool hall where the locals would play pool. The amusing part is that when Pete Falk lost, he'd play a prank by taking out his glass eye and rolling it on the table as if angry, but with a smile on his face! The woman I spoke to said both she and her husband were witness to this and found it typical of Mr. Falk's prankster humour!

Vintage Lingerie Collection -- Warning Pic Heavy!

I finally started taking photos of some of my vintage lingerie collection. I'll warn you, this barely scratches the surface and I probably have about three or four more pic heavy posts to show you my complete collection. Remember, I started collecting when things like this weren't desireable so I had my choice and my choice of price as no one thought it was worth much for someone to want someone's old lingerie! Lingerie has always been a passion of mine, and when I started my indie design company I focused on lingerie. I strove to make vintage style lingerie but with a modern twist. I did phenomonly well, but it got to the point where I had to make a difficult choice: choose an investor, losing control of what I created, or try to keep going it alone. Going it alone proved too difficult so I shuttered in the early to mid-90s. I can't imagine whats involved now, back then everything was still very much the punk DIY aesthetic, and we just did it. And were lucky enough for trendy boutiques to take chances on unknowns. It must be terribly stressful for indie designers today, the money involved alone boggles my mind! If you're an indie designer today, I'd love to hear your experiences.

This is a peignoir set from the 60s. I don't know if you can see the hemline, but its sort of ragged or zig-zagged looking. I suppose they were going for a "cavewoman" look! Kinda nuts as the collar and cuffs on the robe are edged in velvet! The nightgown underneath is just a simple sleeveless shift style.

Another leopard lovely, also from the 60s. This is what would've been considered a "hostess" gown, something to throw on when unexpected company arrived. It zips up the front and can be worn partially zipped for a v-neck look, or as pictured, zipped all the way up creating a turtleneck.

This psychedelic beauty belonged to my dear cousin (we called her our aunt as it suited her.) She had fantastic style, and is the one responsible for teaching me just about everything I know about buying secondhand! Her house was filled with priceless antiques, all picked up for a pittance as they were in undesireable condition. But she knew they could be brought back to life with a good refinishing and new upholstery. Her home should have been in a magazine, it was classy, classic, and had such personality. I'm sad she's no longer with us, but I have some of her beautiful things (clothing, furniture, and housewares) to keep her memory close to me always. (That's our hammy Westie, Fiona who thinks all cameras are for taking photos of her!)

I'm not exactly sure of the date of this beautiful kimono, but am fairly certain its from the late 50s-early 60s. The colours are so vibrant, and I love the design. The front is plain with all the design on the back.

This is a 30s bias cut nightgown. It has (as many from that era do) ties in the back. The lovely lace around the neckline makes it a little more special than the average 30s nightgown.

This is another 30s bias cut nightgown. Its such a pale buttery yellow that I don't think it photographed that well. What's unusual is that I found its twin the same day (in the same shop) in pale pink!

I'm fairly certain this is from the 20s. Its homemade, so there aren't any tags to give me a clue. The top is crocheted lace, and the bottom is pink silk.

This is just a simple bias cut slip from the 30s. Nothing fancy, very basic, but very versatile.

This is a 30s peignoir set. Its so difficult to find both the robe and the nightgown, so whenever you do, you've found a treasure!

One of my prized Pucci pieces. This is one the "Emilio Pucci for Formfit Rodgers" pieces you see most commonly for sale now as so much of it was produced. As I mentioned in my previous post I sold so much vintage Pucci back in the day, but had I known it would've gone to the exhorbitant prices it has today I probably would have kept more of it. Hindsight is always 50/50 right? I only kept the pieces that fit along with one clutch bag and a scarf. So I guess I can't complain! (Except I still wish I had some of it -- the box bags especially!)

60s zebra half slip. The Punk Glam Princess (now my official photographer!) tried to photograph it so you could see the lace edged slits on each side. And yeah, I've worn this as a skirt too!

Well that's the end of part one. It'll take some time before I get around to gathering up enough pieces for part two as I have far too much! I'm actually thinking at this point it might be time to let go of some pieces because its starting to feel like I'm hoarding! But we'll see if I can manage to let go of any pieces, they're all so special in their own way that choosing will be a difficult task indeed!

Frock On A Friday -- 26 Aug 2011

I'm going to confess right now. This is not what I wore today. Today I wore a very boring plain black dress (well at least it was McQueen!) When I went to take a photo for today's "Frock On A Friday" I felt so blah, and decided to change. I re-coloured my hair the other night to get it brighter, and wanted something that went with my hair (silly as that sounds!) So I dug in the closet and the first thing that grabbed my eye was my vintage Pucci dress. Along with my pink YSL Tributes, I felt much better about today's photo! At least I'm confessing up front rather than let you think I bustled around doing housework in Pucci and stilettos all day! (Hey, it does happen, when I wear my EPFR nightgowns!)

This is one of the few Pucci pieces I kept when I had the flea market biz and shop. I used to find Pucci everywhere, and so cheaply that the thought never occurred to me that one day the supply would dry up or that prices would get even more insane than they were then. Back about 20 years ago vintage Pucci was very hot in NY, and I would put insane prices on things figuring if I got the price without haggling I'd be happy. No one ever haggled -- even dealers or designers -- so I guess even though I thought the prices were insane I guess they were still considered reasonable! Oh well, I made money, and made room for more treasures to come into my life so no regrets! As much as I love this dress, I've only worn it a few times as it seems every time I plan to wear it, it just seems so over the top. I think I'll have to rectify that ASAP!

Swirl Dresses -- First Ever Frock On A Friday!

After seeing so many gorgeous frocks, I've decided to do a "Frock on Friday" on occasion. My first post is on the ever popular Swirl dresses. I hope you enjoy!

Swirl dresses have bcome enormously popular lately, but one doesn't know is that back in the 40s the dresses were made as a wraparound apron! Yes as popular as they are today, they were considered house dresses back when they first came out -- quite stylish house dresses none the less!

Here is a photo of my 1940s Swirl dress, still as vibrant as the day it was made. Comfy cotton makes it the perfect summer dress!

This is my other Swirl dress, it has a cute collar, and ruffles around the sleeves and along the bottom hem.

I tired to take a close up of the ruffles but they didn't show too well.

You can see the ruffles at the bottom a little better.

I'm not sure if this one is from the 40s or 50s, but I've owned both close to 30 years, toss them in the washer and dryer and they never fade! They simply don't make fabrics like they use to!

One of the things I love most about Swirl dresses is that they have pockets. I'm a sucker for pockets, and won't even consider a coat unless it has pockets!

Lipgloss with a Humanitarian Twist

I was pleasantly surprised to find a package in the post the other day. No note, just three tubes of what looked liked very luscious lip gloss. Being the crazy researcher I am I found the website and wrote to the owner asking why me? Well as it turned out, it was my relation to Pretty City and after reading about her company I decided this was something that must be written about.

Here follows my unbiased review, along with the humanitarian efforts of the wonderfully big-hearted woman Michelle Coyle Edwards.

Lets first discuss the lip gloss. The company name is " Haughty Cosmetics", great name for a cosmetics company IMO! 17 great colours to choose from with cheeky names like "Take a Risk" and "Make a Statement" Colours range with something to suit anyone. I was sent three colours, and have decided to test one so I can give my unbiased opinion. Then I'll be doing a give away the other two to spread some love and lip gloss!

The colours I was sent are "Take a Risk", "Polish it Off", and "Speak Up". Of course being me, I had to choose "Take a Risk" which not only sums up my rebellious philosophy, but goes quite perfectly with my newly chopped off cotton candy pink hair!

Described as "bright watermelon pink" I thought it suited me perfectly as a nice change of colour for summer!

(Edited to add photos of the lip gloss with the fabulous long applicator, and a photo of me wearing "Take a Risk") The photos were taken in the evening so they don't quite make the impact they do during the day. But I think you can get a good idea of the amount of pigmentation, and the fab slight shimmer -- good things to me whether I'm looking for gloss or lipstick!

To be honest, I'm not usually a fan of lip gloss, I'm more of a lipstick gal. But the consistency of these are lovely -- not sticky, and they stay on for ages (one of my major pet peeves about glosses, they always come off too quickly making application a nightmare!) I also love that every tube is hand filled, making this a very special enterprise! The lip gloss had a lovely consistency, with a huge generously sized wand (finally, no dinky little wander you have to keep dipping to get some colour on your lips!) and I must admit, it lasted pretty much all day, through lattes and all!

For every lip gloss sold, 50% of the net profits go to domestic violence education prevention. Unfortunately Michelle knows all too well how difficult to be in an abusive relationship and how hard it is to get out of one. She's using her business savvy and big heart to help girls and women empower themselves and get the education needed to end domestic abuse. So not only is your money well spent on a small business (hopefully to change soon!) but you are directly contributing to a very important humanitarian effort!

Domestic violence is something we need more education about, and this is just the perfect way to get that word out. Most designers opt to only give small amounts of their special projects which doesn't really amount to much (of course every little bit helps!) This enterprise will bring much needed education. I encourage all of you to take a look at Haughty Cosmeticswebsite and read the amazing work this woman has taken on herself. I'm sure you'll be as impressed as I when I read her story. Seriously, I couldn't stop reading each and every page and you should too!

I will be giving two lip glosses away, one to each entrant. This is open to everyone worldwide. More Flea Market Finds!

I was quite upset as I thought I had lost a gorgeous lime green leather skirt (I'm a self-admitted green queen) thankfully Jeanne remembered where we hid it in the car so I'm happy once again!

I'm in the process of making a blouse from two pieces of cut silk velvet from the 30s that were given to me. As I'd finally got the shape correct, I was reluctant to remove it for the photos. I love the fabric so -- as much as my leather skirt! -- and can't wait to show you the finished product!

I also found these hors d'oeuvres forks and knives at the flea market, which I've been collecting for ages as they're perfect when hosting a party. Great for a cheese plate or antipasto, they always come in handy! These are modern, made in Japan.

These are vintage and were made in France. I think I've had them before we got married over 20 years ago! I especially love the squid!

I hope you enjoyed seeing my goodies as much as I loved finding them!

Local Colour and a Spooky Benefit

As I mentioned previously, we have a lovely old theatre nearby, The Tarrytown Music Hall. On the 23 September they are screening the original "House of Dark Shadows", the film that was made after the popularity of the show.

As kids we rushed home to watch, usually scared out of our wits but loving every episode. The proceeds will go to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Historic Fund. It's a quick jaunt out of the city, and the film is currently being remade with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (did you think anyone else would be chosen for the role?) who also did "Sleepy Hollow". Hmm... Perhaps that's one of the reasons we chose to live here, the landscape is quite haunting in autumn and winter and appeals to my spookier side!

A little known fact is that Lyndhurst was used for the exterior shots for Collingwood mansion for the show, and the receiving vault at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery was used as Barnabas Collins' crypt in both the show and the film. Who knew I grew up just 10 miles or so from my fav show! Or that we'd settle just up the road now!

Don't forget all the spooky events going on during the month of October in honour of Washington Irving's classic "Sleepy Hollow", theres fun to be had for the whole family!

Rebel Never Gets Old

Recently one of the IFB projects was "Independence" and while I thought about it -- was it my first car? My first grown-up clothes I bought myself? Of course I missed the deadline. Then last night it came to me. My independence came because of music. Music set me free, I could be who I wanted, when I wanted and didn't give a fig what anyone thought. I could dress any way that pleased me going from style to style with ease and a sense of curiosity and happiness. I lived a rock n' roll lifestyle (guess I still do to a degree) and wish I could tell you all the fantastic things I saw and did, however that's for the memoir! And I rebelled at every chance I could, usually in the name of all of the injustice in the world.

One song in particular really resonated with me. "Rebel Rebel" by David Bowie. Gosh I was just a young teen when it came out and pronounced to everyone that it was MY song! Below is a clip (sorry if I posted before) of Bowie during his Halloween Jack phase singing the song.

A few years back he redid the song, entitling it "Rebel Never Gets Old" which is the honest truth. Once a rebel always a rebel, and I'm here to prove it! Note the appearance of the Union Jack jacket made by Alexander McQueen makes an appearance.

Creative Urge: Finished Product

I promised I'd give you a look at my swimsuit coverup design when I had it put together. So here it is!

So sorry for the photo quality, the sun was quite bright and this -- believe it or not -- was the area least affected by the blaring sun! We were on our way to the pool, so it's over my Norma Kamali swimsuit (soon as finances allow, I'm buying another style, they are so fabulous!) with my Vivienne Westwood bag that I use as a beach bag (purchased last summer at the VW outlet at Biscester Village for a song!)

Yes, I've cut my hair again, possibly to go even shorter so I'll be all silver. I've been greying since I was 16, and dyeing my hair has been a routine part of my life since then, so now that I'm about 90% silver, I may just let it go and give my poor hair a rest! It's quite pretty and "growing" (Oo bad pun) on me.

Happy 4th of July to everyone in the US! I hope you have a lovely day! YAY for independence in all it's guises!

Kindness: A Tale

I've recently been going through some very tough times. I'm an optimist who prefers to try and spread hope and kindness and try my hardest not to spread negativity. This time there was an attempt to drag my family down with me. It stops there. Say what you will about me, I have thick skin, but leave my family out of it.

Thankfully, as I explain to the Punk Glam Princess, our friends are the family of our choice. We can choose wisely, and cull the toxicity should it ever rear it's ugly head. And my friends are all amazing. Even the ones I've not met in person and only met online through blogging or my many other online gigs.

One of these amazing people is my fav local barista at Starbucks. She always has a smile for everyone, and is truly a burst of sunshine brightening my day whenever I see her. A few years ago she went through a tough bout with cancer and treatment and I remember her working through it and thinking what a courageous and remarkable woman she was. Last week she told me she was hoping to see me as she's moving down south to North Carolina, and she had a vintage coat she wanted me to have. The coat belonged to her grandmother and she had a feeling it would fit me perfect. It's a vintage seal coat from the 30's so she knew she'd have no use for it in NC. I was completely blown away, She wouldn't accept any money, and just wanted it to be loved and worn. Since she's seen me in my myriad vintage clothes, she knew I would treasure it.

Last week I picked it up. I couldn't accept it without giving something in return so we made up a moving/housewarming basket of all sorts of goodies, meals, relaxing candles, fun pool toys for her son, snacks, whatever I could think of that might be welcomed when just moving. And I wrapped everything and put it into a fun beach bag.

When I saw the coat I cried. It was not only beautiful and fit as if it was made to measure, but I felt like I had been made a part of a new family. Like the fur coats I inherited from a family member, I felt like I was being hugged by a new loved one, hard to describe but that's the closest I can describe the feeling. The kindness was overwhelming to me. A week later, I'm still stunned and tears of joy still spring to my eyes when I think of this amazing act of kindness and generosity. I'll let the pics speak for themselves...

Not only will this coat be treasured and worn, one day passed down to the Punk Glam Princess but I feel as if I've made a new lifelong friend. We plan to keep in touch, and had a lovely evening last night picnicking at the yacht club with a birds eye view of the 4th of July fireworks our town puts on over the Hudson. It was a lovely evening filled with good company and great conversation!

Kindness comes in all forms from the little things to the bigger kindnesses. I sincerely believe that the tough times I'm dealing with now has a direct relation to this most kind gesture. Like attracts like, and if we all take the time to spread small kindnesses each day not only will our lives be greatly enriched, but others will catch on and it will spread making the world a much kinder place! My friends are treasures to me, and I hope to make more great friends in the coming years!

Betsy Johnson has such a fun, flirty approach to design that can indeed be worn by any age -- it's all in the styling and Jasmin has stellar super powers when it comes to putting together a look! Usually Betsy's sample sales have a bit of everything from her whole range of goodies at rock bottom prices! I can also vouch for the quality, as I have things I purchased back in the late 70s-80s and they still look fab as well as having stood the test of time without any issues!

Melissa Sample Sale Update

I'm terribly sorry that I wasn't able to get this out earlier, but there's still today and tomorrow to hit the Melissa Sample Sale. And as you'll see, this is a sale you will definitely want to hit!

The sale was filled with Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier at prices between $50-$75! this year there were sample bins in all sizes and these were going for $20! The PGP and I both found VW in those bins and are quite happy with all our finds.

Exactly what I was hoping for -- VW Wedges in beige!

Of course I had to get them in black too. They are the most comfy shoes and great for looking fantastic when it's raining!

I also picked up these VW 3-Straps in purple. Although I'm not that huge of a purple person (too many years of wearing it too often turned me off to it) the colour was so vibrant, and they're also very comfortable, so I think I can manage to find occasion to wear them!

The Punk Glam Princess cleaned up with some very stylish shoes and will be updating her blog with her goodies soon.

Sunglasses Vintage and New

I finally got around to unearthing my vintage sunglass collection and thought it might be nice to show them here. Most I've had since the late 70s to mid 80s and I stupidly used to sell brand new unused vintage sunglasses to flea market vendors -- oh how I wish I had them now! I also included a few of my fav pairs of newer sunglasses as I wear them so much (don't trust the UV protection on the really old ones.)

Here's a group shot, I'll break down my favs into smaller pics.

These are probably my favorite because they belonged to my grandfather who died when I was just 4. They're "Cool Ray Polaroid" in a classic wayfarer style, tortoise frame. I don't wear them as often as I'd like out of paranoia -- today I realised in about 2 years they will be certified antiques!

Look at the fab carving and crystals on these 60s French sunglasses! Tres jolie!

The colour isn't showing up properly but these are purple metallic wayfarers from the 60s!

I can't believe I never wore these fab 70s shades! That's going to be rectified immediately!

These 50s sunglasses have fab light blue glitter along the top!

Here's another pair I never wore (what's wrong with me?) they still have their tags and are French made, from the 50s. Can't you just imagine someone like Brigitte Bardot wearing these on the French riviera?

These are vintage YSL cat eye sunglasses I found on eBay last year. You can still find them as the seller in Canada has a stockpile of them, and I might even wind up with another pair as I wore them to death last summer!

Newer acquisitions -- on the bottom are Alexander McQueens purchased last year, and the top are some Gucci shades I adore for hiding my cheekbones which have gotten sun damaged from sticking out tool far ):

How fab are these 50s huge cat eyes? Love them!

Garden In Full Bloom!

These pictures were taken last week before we had torrential rains. I'm so pleased my peonies are almost a full line across the front of the house, they look so festive and smell heavenly! Sadly now after the rains they are worse for the wear, boo!

As you can see in the background the climbing rose are just starting to blossom. Now they are a riot of blooms!

A few I cut with some roses to bring the lovely scent inside!

This was actually taken a few weeks ago, my massive dogwood didn't blossom so well last year but we got loads this year!

I think maybe our harsh winter made everything bloom more than it has in recent years. So I guess it was worth it for that!

Creative Urge -- Swimsuit Coverup Design

I've been having the urge to get creative and do some sewing lately, and late one night last week I finally gave in to a quick project. I had purchased a length of silk chiffon, embroidered and embellished delicately with sequins last summer while in London. While out vintage shopping with my partner in vintage crime -- Jeanne Suica -- we came across the lovely Berwick Street Cloth Shop. This amazing quality fabric was on sale for what I considered a pittance (I can't remember the exact price, but it was under £10 a metre) so after explaining to the sales assistant that I wanted to make a swimsuit coverup, she was able to help me figure out how much I'd need. It turned out that I decided on a different style from the original caftan I had envisioned, and could have used a bit less. However, as I designed this so that it could be taken apart and redesigned into a different style, I'm sure the extra fabric will come in handy at some point!

This was my inspiration:

I saw this on Net-A-Porter, unfortunately it's no longer available so I can't link directly, but they have a lovely collection of swimsuit coverups. While I loved the style, the colour was not what I wanted as it would only work with one of my swimsuits. Then I remembered the fabric! So I got to draping, and came up with a similar design, which was easy peasey to make!

I haven't sewn it up yet, but I was able to get the shape I wanted by using only three pins! My idea, while similar to the inspiration, was based on tying a pareo -- which I almost did instead of bothering to create a more finished look!

All I had to do was drape the fabric on the mannequin to get the correct shape, pin, and then I'll have to sew a few seams. The shoulders are created by draping the ends over and stitching to the back. This creates the v-neck. There is only one big seam, which is down the front. You could switch it around and put the seam in the back, but you'll lose the higher in front hemline which will wind up in the back. To switch it up further you could make a drawstring neckline, which is similar to what the original inspiration has, and would create larger draped armholes (I prefer the shorter draped armholes as pictured above). Since it's silk chiffon, the hardest part is that I want the edges hand rolled and stitched down to make it cleaner looking. -- although I may wind up machine sewing the edges down as it would seem that would be sturdier. Other than that, this will be one of the easiest design and sewing projects I've done in quite some time!

I'll be sure to show a picture once I'm finished sewing it together -- for now, it's too hot to sit around and sew, so I'm off to the pool to cool down! If you decide to try this project, be sure to let me know in the comments, I love seeing different adaptations of a design!

Vintage Picnic Find

Since it was so warm last Monday I decided we'd have a BBQ and our first al fresco dinner on the patio. I really just wanted an excuse to use the unused vintage picnic set I had picked up off eBay at the end of last summer and had yet to use! It's from the 70's and quite cleverly put together so that everything fits in an easily transportable little container. You need to add the few extras like vintage tablecloth or place mats, napkins, and maybe bigger cups along with your feast. I'm quite enamoured of it, and mainly took the pictures so that I could figure how to get it back together again! It's quite a puzzle! At under $20 including shipping I was very pleased, as I couldn't find something near as innovative on the market today!

This is how it looks all bundled up. The cart it's sitting on was picked up a few years ago at a rummage sale for under $5. It's from the 60's and collapses for easy storage in the garage during off season. Quite useful next to the grill for keeping everything to hand, as well as moving the cooked food out of the way.

Top off, revealing the first layer.

1st layer reveal -- dinner plates in front, in back is a bowl & stack of glasses, to the front of that is salt & pepper shakers.

There is a large serving bowl in front, which was taken off the top revealing the cutlery (still inside main bowl with handle.)

Remove cutlery to find the last layer which are the little dessert bowls in front. The bottom part with handle becomes another serving bowl.

There you have the whole set! It's going to get loads of use this summer when we hit the pool and bring our picnic lunch or have a BBQ dinner after swimming. Ahhh warm lazy summer days, I can't wait!

PS for those of you who are interested, there were tons of these very sets on eBay for a variety of prices. I went for the unboxed set -- at a lower price -- as I'd never use it. I think I found them by searching for "vintage picnic set" or similar.

Signs of Spring... Finally!

These pictures were taken last week when we had a warm streak and while poking around in the garden doing a bit of weeding. After a brutal winter I was quite enthusiastic to see the new growth!

Columbine is popping up!

This is what my lilacs looked like last Monday.

And this is the same branch today! Last night the scent was wafting through the air, I can't wait until it's in full bloom as it will fragrance the air around the whole block (we have 3 huge old lilac trees.)

Daffodils are out enforce.

No lone tulips this year, they are popping up everywhere!

My climbing roses are leafy as are my rose bushes, no buds yet they'll come a bit later this month.

Wild violets fill the lawn. I don't allow my poor Punk Glam King to mow until they start to die. Too pretty to look at!

This is the first time I've had hens and chicks (houseleek) survive a winter. And it even had babies!

I forgot what these are called, theyre the white version of grape hyacinth.

When we first moved here nearly 11 years ago I planted different varieties of daffodils. This is one of my favs, and of course I saved no info to get more! Such a pretty salmon centre!

Another daffodil variety I have no clue about.

This is a peony I thought bit it last year, but it's sprouting, so I've got hope!

I swiped a bit of forsythia from my neighbour to bring some spring inside!

I got 2 of these 1970's patio tables for our back patio, or the area I want to make into a sitting garden for $10 total!

Also purchased last weekend was this, which I will recover to match the love seat on our covered front porch. It was under $10, and the swirls don't match perfectly to our wrought iron love seat but they blend nicely.

It was so warm I broke out a summer dress to run errands! Leopard dress is by Norma Kamali, and I love it's vintage feel and swingy skirt so much I also got it in plain black. So happy too, its one of those dresses you find yourself throwing on when you want to look nice but are either too heat beat or haven't the energy to really try! Tried to show the shoes, they're Miu Miu and have tiny little studs. Very comfy and I've worn them to death even over the winter! You can't see from the photos but I used an OTC organic keratin treatment which pulled all my colour out. I kind of like it as it goes from blonde on top down to red at the ends. Ombre-ish I guess. I do feel the lure of Manic Panic calling my name so I'm sure this look will be changed soon and Vampire Red will triumph! (If you click to enlarge the pics you can see the stud details on the shoes, and in the 2nd picture you will see my ombre-ish hair a bit better.)

As you will notice, I've not yet pulled all the leaves away. This is because it's still been getting quite cold at night and I fear if I do, what growth I have will freeze and be lost. Hopefully this will all change within the next week or so, and then I can do a proper weeding and maybe even some planting. I really can't wait to get my hands in the dirt!

One last thing... Here is a photo of the area I want to make into a sitting garden. We used to have an above ground pool there, but it proved too shady and the water never warmed, rendering it a useless lawn ornament! Any ideas of what to plant around the perimeter? This is as sunny as it gets.

I'd prefer perennials or some kind of flowering bushes. All ideas welcome!

Things Are Gonna Change… I Can Feel It!

On Monday morning, my life will change. I am having my muffin top and all of my shiny silver stretch marks removed from my fleshy, live-giving form. I’m having plastic surgery, a tummy tuck to be exact, and yes I’m talking right out loud about it. This decision has had my head in a tizzy fashion wise, sending me searching for some fashion guidance to compliment my new figure. I’ve really been inspired by nostalgic what-comes-around-goes-around fashion trends, feel good fashion and a variety of “Top (insert number here)” lists. 90′s trends seem to be popular in the fashion blogosphere; you kids are talking about sheer clothes, color blocking and threads ripped to shreds. I’m really appreciating the inspirational instruction given by all you clever e-journalists. Nostalgic Music Friday - Circus of Power "Call of the Wild"

This was a great NY band back in the 80's and 90's. No hair band here, just straight up raw rock n' roll!

Not my fav song of theirs, great nonetheless and I really love the NY scenes -- The Cat Club was the best! Saw so many amazing bands there and met amazing people! The scene back then was just amazing, and I hope there's just as great a scene today. As a bonus, I'm in at least one crowd scene that I can notice, and had a little "history" with them. One tortured me -- I had a major crush and he on me, but it went nowhere. He was evil! The other tortured me like most musicians do when you're dating. He was also one of the reasons when I met my husband and he wasn't in a band, was a good reason for me to decide to date him! Sorry can't name names, that's for the memoir!

Norma Kamali "Try Before You Buy"

One of the things I dread most each year is finding a new swimsuit. Up until we joined a yacht club (not as boaters but for the lovely pool overlooking the Hudson) I wasn't too fussed and could get by with my two standards. But now that we're there more often than not, I need a few more to switch off. Since losing weight the old standards are now drooping in places you really don't want droopage, so the hunt began.

I've always loved Norma Kamali swimsuits and over the years have had many (I think I still have a vintage 80s one somewhere!) I love how she incorporates vintage styling with modern fabrics bringing the looks to a new level.

So yesterday I went to her website to peruse the offerings. There on the front page was the *exact* style I wanted! And at a fabulous price! It's the $98 Bill swimsuit available in red, black, acid, olive, and white. I was torn between red and white, but decided to go for red and placed my order.

Just hours ago the lovely Fed Ex man delivered my package!
It arrived with a pre-paid Fex Ex bubble wrap envelope in case you need to return. How easy is that?

Too excited, I tore open the package and tried it on asap! Perfect style, perfect fit! We've got a keeper! And the best part was not having to traipse from shop to shop trying on goodness knows how many suits only to settle for something that fit but wasn't really the style I wanted!

For those ageists out there, this is what a 51 year old woman, who's lived a full life, had a child at 40 looks like. (Okay, not my best angle!) I do hope you're so lucky when you get to be 50! (Excuse the turban and shades, I was just out of the shower! Hey at least I smeared on some red lipstick and my flame Tributes!)

I will definitely use this service again! And this baby is a keeper!!

Here we go...

1. I own 100's of pairs of shoes (not exaggerating!) from the 30s up to the present. I lost cost somewhere close to 200 and that was about 4 years ago! Most are vintage as I started over 30 years ago when they were cheap and plentiful. I'm a firm believer that shoes make an outfit, and only buy what I love and would wear for many years to come!

2. I'm not big on sweets, much more of a savoury gal. Give me fresh bread, cheeses and fresh vegetables and I'm in food heaven! My one weakness is English sausages, I could eat them everyday!

3. I have more dresses than any other item of clothing as I love that you can pull one on and instantly look great without stressing over separates that need to go together.

4. Here's a huge disclosure that will probably freak out a lot: I'm a full-fledged modern witch, having gone through many years of training both here and in the UK. I attained my 3rd degree (high as you can go within my branch of Wicca/Paganism) as well as am considered an elder within the community for quite some years. I've also trained 1000's. I've written books on the subject (as well as other metaphysical and non-fiction titles) and am considered by my peers to be an expert (but I'm always learning -- kill me and put me put of my misery if I ever do stop!) Oh and 'I see dead people'! (Good times. Not!) The whole "witchy" look kinda pisses me off, real witches look very much like everyone else and not the stereotype. Those who play into the stereotype only wind up coming off as poseurs! One of these days I'll dispel the stereotypes and blow away the hipsters!

5. Green is my all-time fav colour and various shares are frequently found on my finger and toenails, as well as my wardrobe and home!

6. My husband is the love of my life and my hero! And my daughter is more precious to me than anything as she was a miracle baby that I was told could never bring to term!

7. From the late 70s to even now I've met more rock stars and rock gods than most people can even think of! I'm still friends with many. And boy the stories I could tell... I was never a groupie, but more like one of the guys! (Hella lot more fun by far!)

Bonus:
If I don't travel frequently I actually become physically ill! My wanderlust is shared with glee with the best little adventure and travel companion one could ask for, my daughter. She's always up for one of our adventures!

Following on from my most recent post about the dispute we’re involved in over the “Shoeperwoman” brand, I’ve just received the following comment from Laura Blake, in which she demands that I immediately remove my post, and threatens to contact the police and have me charged with harassment if I do not. As Laura has posted her comment in the public domain, I’m sure she will not mind me reproducing it here:

I am really disappointed to see the way that you have reacted today, and in organising an inaccurate hate campaign against me via your blog.

I think I’ve been more than willing to talk with you, and reach an amicable solution and today reached out to you to offer to bookmark and outline the points of differentiation between our sites.

You have posted a lot of misleading, inaccurate and incomplete information about me and my business on your site today and it’s been hurtful to see someone act so unprofessionally and damaging to my business and my name.

Therefore I wanted to once again reach out to you, and ask if you wanted to have a proper discussion (so we can both operate in our respective niches…I categorically did not see your site first and decide to set mine up anyway – I explained all of this to you, but think you’ve misinterpreted my comments.)

I did not set out to close you down, or take over, and registering the TM was about protecting me as a business…I would do that for any business I start, it’s the first rule of setting up a company. Seeing any form of Shoeper-Woman wasn’t already registered I didn’t think that ShoeperWoman was a serious company, I thought it was an American site, and just a bit of fun, and not a competitor as you don’t retail shoes or design them.

I would still consider talking about the linking suggestion I made earlier, a joint statement, or even tweaking my branding (or not using certain phrases if you believe they are ‘yours’) so I’m more than open to those type of discussions (or others if you have any bright ideas) but you MUST remove your earlier post about me that was slander and cyberbullying, and I also expect an apology on your site and an end to this hate campaign.

If you are not willing to do this, I’m going to speak to the police in the morning about pressing charges against you for harassment, slander, and cyber-bullying.

I’m sure this is something we could both do without right now, but as above, I’m not out to cause or do any malicious damage, so I’d appreciate the same professional courtesy.

I’m frankly astonished that someone would not only try to trademark my blog name, but then threaten to report me to the police for defending myself. The post below is an accurate statement of the situation I’ve found myself in and I’m confident that it contains nothing which could be construed as libel or harresment: indeed, Laura actually suggested that I publish a post clarifying the differences between our two sites, having also suggested that we issue a press release about the situation to garner publicity. I will not be responding again to Laura, as I can see little point in trying to communicate with someone who is threatening to report me to the police, but obviously she is free to take any action she feels is appropriate.

As I mentioned previously please do comment, tweet, FB, and let Amber know of your support. This must stop. You never know, it may be you next! Let's make this history!

An important announcement about Shoeperwoman, the shoe blog

(First of all, the Shoeper Shoe Challenge roundup will not be appearing today as my time has been totally taken up with the issue below. My apologies to everyone who’s sent me photos - I promise I will publish them on Monday. In the meantime, I would really appreciate your comments and re-tweets on this post…)
I had really hoped not to have to write this post, but having exhausted my other options I’ve taken legal advice (from the wonderful Caveat Calcei, who you all know from the Shoe Challenge), and feel I have no option but to go public about an issue regarding the “Shoeperwoman” name and this site.
As most of my regular readers will know, I set up Shoeperwoman two years ago this month, having registered the domain in May of 2008 and spent a year planning the site. At the time there were no other sites using the name. Earlier this year, however, a UK-based company launched a shoe blog called “Shoeperwoman” and an associated retail website of the same name.
I don’t really want to link to these sites as I feel they are damaging enough to my brand without me helping their Google rank, but you can see the address of the retail site from the image above and the blog can be found at shoeper-woman.blogspot.com (note: all of the links in this post are nofollow, and this is the only time I will link to these sites.) First of all, I want to clarify that these sites have absolutely no connection to Shoeperwoman.com or to Midas Media. I realise it’s confusing for people as they are using the same name, and writing about the same subjects, often in exactly the same way (i.e. using phrases like “shoeperhero”, “Shoeperman” etc.) but there is no connection, so please know that this is the only “Shoeperwoman” site run by us (with the exception of our associated Twitter and Facebook accounts, which also use the “Shoeperwoman” name), therefore if you come across these sites, or any others, please be aware that they have nothing to do with us.
The other company is also using the name “Shoeperwoman” on Twitter, Facebook and other sites, which I realise adds to the confusion. If you are in any doubt whether something you read online is being said by me, or by Laura Blake, who is the owner of the other sites, please feel free to get in touch.
When I found out about these sites, I immediately contacted Laura Blake, who tells me that she does not believe there is any issue with her using exactly the same name as me for her two sites (although she has put up a disclaimer today which you can read on her blog). Obviously I’m disappointed about this. I set up Shoeperwoman.com two years ago: it is my livelihood (along with my other blogs), and Terry and I have worked very hard to build up the brand to where it is today. It’s disheartening, to say the least, to find that someone has knowingly decided to use exactly the same name and idea for a very similar project (Laura tells me she was aware of the existence of this site but decided to use the name regardless), and obviously this will make it much harder for both of the respective businesses to thrive, as rather than having our own unique identities, these two new sites have effectively set themselves up in direct competition to us instead.
What Laura didn’t tell me during our lengthy email conversations, was that not only has she knowingly used a name which has been associated with my blog for the past two years, she has also applied for the UK trademark to the name “Shoeperwoman”. If she is successful in this application, this would mean that I would no longer be able to use the name I have made mine, and this site will effectively cease to exist. As the revenue from this site forms a large part of my income, I’m sure you can understand my distress at this, and the reason I’m writing this post.
To answer the obvious question that has cropped up in relation to this: no, we do not own the trademark to the name “Shoeperwoman”. We looked into doing this when we launched the site, however the very high cost of this was prohibitive for us, as it is for most other bloggers, and so we were forced to rely on the goodwill and common sense of our fellow bloggers/site owners, and to hope that most people would prefer to create something that’s truly their own rather than to duplicate another brand. Obviously that isn’t always the case: some of you may remember the issues Jennine Jacob’s The Coveted encountered recently when another site launched using the same name, and if this can happen to me, and can happen to a well-known blogger like Jennine, it can happen to anyone.
We have now lodged our own trademark application for the name, which means we’re already hundreds of pounds out of pocket in our bid to assert our right to continue to use a name which has been associated with this site for two years now, and which I have also used on Twitter, Facebook and other sites for the same length of time. Having taken advice on this, we believe it could cost us much more to defend our brand, which is obviously causing us a great deal of stress. This is where you come in:

Obviously this is a source of huge concern to us, so we would welcome any support our readers and friends have to offer us, in the shape of comments, re-tweets and advice. If you are a blogger, and would like to mention this is issue on your site, I would be eternally grateful, not just for my sake, but because as I mentioned above, this is something that can happen to anyone, and it is devastating to work so hard on something for so long, only to see it put at risk like this. Also, any links back to Shoeperwoman.com (especially those using the word “Shoeperwoman” as the link text) would be a huge help to us right now as they will help cement our position in search engines and support our right to the trademark when we file our dispute.
I also want to say a big thank you to everyone who has emailed Terry and I with their support over this issue: it really means the world to us to know that we have loyal readers who will continue to support us no matter how many other ”Shoeperwomen” crop up!

Emerging Designer -- Stacy Lomman Fall 2011

I was privileged to attend emerging NY designer Stacy Lomman's second collection show last week, and view how she has grown as a designer as well as the new direction she took for the upcoming season. If you'll recall her debut collection consisted of beautiful cocktail dresses in hem lengths to appeal to many different women. This collection, entitled "Les Femmes de la Resistancè", included a foray into sportswear, as well as some of her gorgeous dresses. In her words: "Fall 2011 glamourises and romanticises the bold and fearless women of the French Resistancè who lead high risk and clandestine lifestyles. Mystery, intrigue and espionage lurk within each piece in the collection. Luxurious fabrics and subdued colours feminize the military influence, thereby enforcing an air of chic strength. While the early 1940's serve as inspiration, the collection interprets the period into modern and very wearable clothes." She's managed to accomplish exactly that with this latest collection!

Motorcycle jacket in grey wool with distressed silver foil print, black wool/mohair shirt with back patch pocket.

Black cropped trench vest in heavy silk twill, lined with olive nylon, coated nylon pencil pants with back pocket detail in olive. (I loved the combo of black and olive as well as this silhouette -- military without being too overt.)

Olive bomber jacket in crocodile patterned jacquard, black leather shorts.

Unlined trench coat in double face in poly/nylon/mohair and heavy rib knit sleeves. (I think this one is a great look for so many different figure types, again proving Stacy has a knack for designing for many, not just model figures!)

Mushroom grey cropped jacket in wool/cashmere lined with coated nylon in grey, matching pencil skirt with "gunflap" detail.

Camel cape in wool/mohair lined with silk, cigarette pant in bronze stretch satin. (While I'm not sure I could pull this look off, I'm in love with it! Capes are a staple in my wardrobe, and I love this interesting take on it!)

Beige angora/cashmere dress with knit bodice, open back & bullet/chain detail.

Asymmetric, one-sleeve dress in olive crocodile patterned jacquard & leather trim.

Bronze stretch satin dress with trench detail in back and shoulder.

Strapless column dress in bronze cashmere with gold zipper & chain detail. (I love this look and the detailing!)

Black slim dress in crepe black acetate with fleur-de-lis breast patch and leather trim. (This is also a favourite look .... now if I can only find an occasion to wear it!)

Slate grey dress with full skirt in nylon "parachute" fabric.

The talented and lovely designer herself- Stacy Lomman!

While I would consider her debut collection elegant, glamourous, and sexy, this collection moves on to be elegant with an edge. Class with some sass! I believe the pieces could easily be incorporated into ones existing wardrobe, and can easily see women of all ages not only finding the collection appealing, but looking fabulous at any age! Triumph! Brava Stacy!

Technology has become a part of every day life. By the end of 2011, they expect more people to own a smart phone than an average cell. Augmented reality is becoming… well, reality. And even your parents got on Facebook, finally motivating everyone to learn how to customize their privacy settings!

I can’t say fashion has been on the forefront of these advances. In fact, until Jennine brought together IFB I didn’t have any friends who could edit HTML and discuss whether Pre-Fall was better than Resort. Go Westwood -- Where To Find

Vivienne Westwood is one of my all time favourite designers. However, here in the US the outlets for her designs are limited at best and likely last season. So I did a little research to find UK sites that ship to the US in order to find not only the latest but what would suit me best.

I fell in love with this asymmetrical tie waist dress and found it on Stripes Fashion UK more than half the price Net-A-Porter was selling it, so of course I couldn't resist!

It came packaged lovely and even included a hand written note!

The front, notice the long "tail" in back, I love the look!

This is the back of the dress -- my waist is so small that I can tie it in front creating another look!

I did well on Net-A-Porter when they had their first reductions. But frankly I'm annoyed that one of the dresses I really want is on their UK site and won't ship to the US. Grr!

I got these two dresses on Net-A-Porter's first reductions. Love the versatility of both!

The next site I found with an extensive collection of Vivienne Westwood, including handbags, jewelry, shoes, as well as menswear was Hervia. I've ordered three dresses from them and the prices come close to the price of one dress on Net-A-P0rter or Zappos Couture! They offer free worldwide shipping on orders over 100GBP, and have amazing sales (some items are still on sale at this writing!) Again, I was very pleased with my purchases from them although shipping time seems to take longer than usual.

This is the first dress I got from Hervia on their great sale (ignore my wonky mannequin -- one of the best things about VW dresses is that you can twist them around to make interesting shapes!)

I'm currently (read that as anxiously) awaiting this dress from Hervia. Can't wait for it to arrive, reminds me of Tim Burton!

I happen to love dresses, less fuss, no trying to find things that go with various pieces -- just throw on and look great! So I've decided this year I'll spend less on separates and instead by fantastic dresses.

So a little research along with some exchange rates can net you some great deals as well as gorgeous Vivienne Westwood clothing! I hope this helps the VW fanatics out there and you too can net some great deals!

Closet Purging Has Kept Me From Blogging!

As the New Year approached, I realized I had a lot of closet purging to do. Decisions to make (closing the Etsy shop, and ditching eBay), donations to my favourite charity, and clothing that needs to sell so I can find my beloved "babies" go to g00d homes where they are loved as much as I loved them. So eventually I'll be re-opening "Shop Idee Fixe" offering designer, high street, as well as vintage. I even have a few tricks up my sleeve --think giveaways, auction style listings, and more! this was/ is a major undertaking, as many of my vintage items now fit the Punk Glam Princess, and i have a future vintage collection of items I love and will continue to love for years to come!

Happy 2011!

Hello Everyone!

If you missed last year's post, please read it here rather than me repeat the same old drivel! I'd much rather take this time to thank all my readers as well as beloved friends old and new. 2010 enabled me to do some pretty fabulous things, and I treasure every minute. However, being one that has her thoughts focused on the future I can't wait for a new year and the new adventures it will present! So here's to good times with loved ones and friends old and new!

Last year I had "My Friends Have" by Marianne Faithful, a song that never lets me down just as my friends never do! Punk Glam Princess and I hit Saks last week, as there was a perfect pair of Miu Miu's on sale that I'd been dying for. It's hard to pass up that great of a sale, and yet again my angel sales assistant Hope came through for me finding the very last pair in my size. Bad Blogger, BOO!

Hi everyone,

I can't believe its been nearly a month since I last blogged. What can I say? This is insane season for us with all our birthdays and catching up to holidays as well. Apologies, blogging will continue to be sporadic until it calms down.

I did make out nicely for my birthday on the 29th -- a gorgeous new pair of patent studded MiuMiu's. Thank you again Hope (at Saks) you truly go above and beyond for me and I adore you!

And today, on a whim, we hit the Betsy Johnson sample sale. OMG, we did so well! Got all kinds of goodies for Punk Glam Princess' girlie sleepover Saturday, plus some ultra sexy dresses for me and stuff for PGP (she adores Betsy Johnson.)

I also had the pleasure of meeting Jasmin from Vintage Vandalizm. She is every bit as sweet, charming, and stunning as she portrays on her fab blog. If you haven't checked her blog -- do, its one of my must-reads! We actually got the same dress so now we're dress twins!

Here are some photos of what I picked up. Prices were great, and hard to fit me was thrilled to find things that fit as if they were custom made! The PGP is thrilled with her goodies too!

I don't usually go for frou-frou dresses, but these were stunning and can be dressed down. I just can't pass up dresses as I adore them, so easy to throw on -- and when they fit tiny me perfectly, well match made in heaven!

Too late, and too lazy to try everything on so the dress form will have to do! keep i n mind the dress form is bigger than my figure, so everything fits a lot better when on me,.

I'm so happy I dragged us all out in the cold. PGP is thrilled and goodies galore for her sleepover -- designer goodies no less! They were so generous giving her boxes of perfume samples to give her friends. Those kids are gonna be in heaven!

Halloween 2010 20th Anniversary

This past Halloween was a special year for us as it marked our 20th year of marriage. Sometimes it seems like we're still newlyweds, so it actually felt quite shocking to put a number to it!

My Punk Glam King made brunch reservations for us at the inn where we got married. The Kittle House in beautiful Chappaqua, NY was the scene for their very first Halloween wedding 20 years ago which they created superbly. We were told that since then they've hosted many more Halloween weddings, and they were actually setting up for one as we had our brunch! I highly recommend their brunch, it honestly has everything you could imagine from delicious breakfast type foods to Sunday roasts, pasta, dessert too. Delicious!

My brunch outfit consisted of a bat print McQ dress and my anniversary gift, MiuMiu glitter booties. (I gave PGK these. Special thanks to Zarinah for holding the last pair in black until I could get down to the McQueen boutique. You rock Z!) If you look closely you can see an antique Chinese bat brooch attached to my jacket lapel that I've had for about 30 years. Bats are a good luck symbol in China, and you'll find lovely tapestries or art with bats. I've been bat-shit crazy (in more ways than one) my whole life for those little sweeties and have a nice little collection of interesting items with bats.

The Punk Glam Princess decided that this year she wanted to be a Vampire Queen. Not just any Vampire Queen, but one that battles and kills the bad vampires. Okay... Being the fabric hoarder I am, I just so happened to have the exact fabric on hand to create a unique costume.

PGP's skirt was three layers. A bat print (what? you expected pixies?) then a black tulle skirt, and then some red tulle over that. I basically made three tubes, doubled fabric, then just sewed a straight seam at the top as a channel for the elastic.

All three layers wound up looking like this.

This is the tool I use to pull the elastic through the channel. Sure beats the old days of a big old safety pin!

Preview. In the end she wound up opening the top two layers in the center -- I didn't sew a seam up the back because I had an idea she'd want to do this -- so you could see the bottom layer.

I also made her a gorgeous necklace of roses dipped in glitter and studded with crystals (which she broke at school), adding one to her crown as well. My neighbor made her real fangs from an impression of her teeth.

No, that's not red eye from the flash, those are red contacts! They were actually the impetus for this costume. I should have warned you that the Keith Richards song "Demon" was foreshadowing for my costume! I went as my inner demon. I love my inner demons (oh I have a few!) without them, I'd never survive, persist, nor propel myself anywhere. Embracing the dark with the light brings balance. So I couldn't go too grotesque. Since I consider my demons part of my inner fire, it was flames all around my eyes. I wasn't that pale either, that's just the flash washing me out.

Since this year was our 20th anniversary and we had plans during the day, we opted not to do our usual mad outdoor display. I was glad too, it turned really cold! I did have a great idea for a set-up, but that will wait for next year!

"Web" Leggings DIY Tutorial

Since the lovely & talented -- Nadia & Cami -- at Discount posted some photos of things we used to make back in the 80's, I said I would try to come up with a tutorial since its so easy, and fun to come up with interesting ideas. Here is my pretty lame attempt at a vlog.

Here are a few photos so you can see a little better. These are an original pair from the 80's, so please excuse their extremely faded condition.

This is what they look like when you do the webbing down the side of the leggings.

Here is a pic of the slashed fabric that will be weaved, creating the web.

Lastly, I couldn't make a post without showing some shoe porn, and of course my Target bat leggings (the pink bats match perfectly with the shoes!)

They're actually fuchsia, not pink but aren't showing too well in the photos.

(Special thanks to Hope at Saks who found me the last pair in my size! They're so comfy I wear them often and call them my running around shoes as I never tire when I wear them in spite of an over 5 inch heel!)

Hello Gorgeous Extension Review, Plus How To

Some time ago when I was still blonde, I purchased human hair extensions from Hello Gorgeous! Now that I'm a blazing redhead, I needed to get another set so I could dye them to match. The lovely people at Hello Gorgeous! were happy to send me a set so that I could write this review, as well as show you just how easy it is to get a salon look without paying salon prices!

Beautiful packaging, with loads of info on how to care for your human hair extensions. One big rule of thumb is that since they aren't growing out of your head, they don't get the oils from your scalp. So it's important to not wash them often to keep them in top shape.

They come with a set of 8 extensions, which is plenty to give you a nice full look. If you have a small head like myself, you may be able to get away with using less.

Shannon was lovely enough to take a look at my blog and found the perfect base colour for me. As you can see, I almost didn't have to dye them at all!

Now for the dying process. Get a plastic bowl, a dye applicator, and ALWAYS wear gloves. Dyes will stain everything, so be sure to wear an old tee or similar. Plus, you should do a patch test to make sure you don't get an allergic reaction to the dye.

Mix up your dye according to directions in the plastic bowl. Make sure to mix well!

Place newspaper or some kind of drop cloth you can toss after as it may get messy and you want to protect whatever surface you're working on.

You'll use aluminum foil to place the extensions, so that you can fold them up. Much like the process of when you get highlights.

Paint on the dye, making sure to cover all the hair. I turned mine over to make sure I got it all covered.

Once the hair is covered, fold it up in the aluminum foil, making sure no hair is sticking out. Time according to directions, then rinse until the water runs clear.

Et Voila! The Punk Glam Princess took this pic of me on the train, and it really shows my colour perfectly!

I love how great the colour matches perfectly, and its been fun to play with having long hair again. It was actually longer when I had the PGP, then when she was two I stupidly cut it and haven't been able to get it to grow again due to its texture changing with pregnancy.

I'll be playing around with different styles and posting soon. I haven't cut them yet as I'm enjoying them as is too much, but when I do, I'll be sure to post that process as well!

I know I'm sorely remiss in getting this update post up, but what can I say -- life gets in the way sometimes!

Actually this is perfect timing if you're starting to think about the holidays and unique gifts. I do suggest you order early from Novica, as most of these items are coming from far-flung locales and can take a while to arrive in time for gift giving. I opted for some jewelry as I was in need of some nice everyday earrings, but there are so many categories to choose from that it boggles the mind!

I was really happy with the customer service, my orders went out right away. And the quality can't be beat for items created by small artisans. In all, my experience was great and I plan to do some holiday shopping real soon!

Now what you really want to see, the items I chose:

I was in the mood for something a bit tribal, but I also needed some new hoops. These fit the bill nicely.

I loved the spike look to these and they suit me perfectly!

In closing, I'm very happy with everything from the fine craftsmanship, to the inclusion of info on the artist, to Novica and what they are contributing to helping artisans get themselves out of poverty and provide for their families.

Btw, I was having such a crappy day that I declared it Keith Richards day to try and cheer me up. I've supjected my household to Keith and the Stones ALL day long and as I can't sleep it's bound to go on all night to! I even did version 2 of young Keith hair, mine is getting a bit long for it to look too great but I'm always in the process of doing something to my hair! Here's a crappy photo booth pic to prove it!

Yeah, its a rats nest, but who the hell wants to fix their hair at nearly 2am?
